Lawrence County officers arrested a Decatur man on Tuesday on drug charges after an investigation that started in the Hatton community, Sheriff Gene Mitchell said.

Alex Kesly Speake, 31, of 2605 Sherwood Oaks Ct., Decatur, was charged with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

Mitchell said his department received complaints from citizens in Hatton that Speake was distributing marijuana in the area. Undercover Drug Task Force agents then purchased “hydroponic” marijuana from Speake with a controlled buy. The sheriff said hydroponic marijuana is one of the most potent forms of the drug, due to the plants being fertilized with vitamins and nutrients during the growth process. The hydroponic variety of the drug is more expensive on the street than regular soil-grown marijuana, Mitchell said.

At press time, Speake was being held in the Lawrence County Jail on $15,000 bond, but also has a hold placed on him pending a probation revocation hearing from a previous drug conviction.
