A Town Creek man faces charges of possessing forged instruments after being found in possession of counterfeit currency while being served an arrest warrant Sunday.
Benjamin Howlett, 20, of 644 Bradley Street, Town Creek, also faces a charge of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.
Town Creek Police Chief Jerry Garrett said officers were serving an arrest warrant on Howlett when they found $1,020 in counterfeit currency in his pants pocket during a search for weapons.
The arrest warrant followed a grand jury indictment, Garrett said. Officers searched for concealed weapons and found the currency, which was all the same denomination with the same serial numbers. Howlett claimed the money was not his, Garrett said.
“He said he had been out Saturday night at several businesses and clubs, so they might want to check their currency,” Garrett said.
Howlett was arrested on the drug indictment and the forgery charges and held on $15,000 bond. The investigation into the counterfeit money is continuing, Garrett said, and other charges could result.
