Applications are now open for the statewide Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
Through the program, qualifying seniors who are at least 60 years old may apply for Senior Farmers Market Vouchers. Those who are approved will receive five $6 vouchers—a total of $30, which can be used to purchase eligible foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, honey and herbs from participating Farmers markets and roadside stands.
For Lawrence citizens, the vouchers can be used at the Lawrence County Farmers Market, located on Alabama 157 in Moulton, and at the Town Creek Farmers Market on Alabama 101. A full list of participating markets and stands across the state can be accessed at http://agi.alabama.gov/docs/fma/RedemptionSites.
Funds for the program are limited, so applications will be approved on a first-come basis, according to the Alabama Farmers Market Authority, who administers the benefits.
Applications can only be submitted online at http://fma.alabama.gov/SeniorNutrition/.
Various agencies in Lawrence County have offered to assist individuals without internet access, but applicants must be willing to provide the information needed to complete the form, County Extension Coordinator Donna Shanklin said.
Local Nutrition Centers also have paper applications that can be submitted to NARCOG in Decatur or to the Lawrence County Extension Office in Moulton.
“The application only takes a few minutes to complete with just a few details such as name, address, phone number, last four of social security number, date of birth, number of people living in household, and gross monthly income before taxes are needed,” she said. “You can stop by (the Lawrence Extension Office) for direct assistance or just call in.”
Qualified applicants must be at least 60 years old on the day they file the application, and the applicant’s gross household income must not exceed the following specified limits in order to qualify:
• $1,718 monthly for a household of one
• $2,327 monthly for a household of two
• $2,934 monthly for a household of three
• $3,541 monthly for a household of four
• $4,150 monthly for a household of five
• $4,756 monthly for a household of six
Growers interested in accepting Senior Vouchers (FMNP) are required to view a video and complete a test on its material. The video may be viewed online at http://agi.alabama.gov/divisions/executive/fma/fma-training. Interested growers may also view the video by attending a FMNP meeting, which will be held in Lawrence County on Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Moulton Lions Club.
