The Alabama Cooperative Extension System Summer Fun Shops will begin Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with a fishing derby at Warrior Camp.

The Extension Office is hosting its summer workshop series for children ages 8 to 18 years old during June and July. 

Preregistration is required for all classes. Class size may be limited, and each Fun Shop is subject to cancellation if less than five participants register. 

All Fun Shops will be held at the Lawrence County Extension Office in Moulton unless otherwise noted. 

The following workshops will be offered:

Fishing Derby at Warrior Camp: June 1

Join local youth from Lawrence and Winston counties on Saturday, June 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the fishing derby sponsored by the USDA Forest Service and Winston County Natural Resource Council.

Dancin’ Fun with Jennifer: June 4

Move and groove with instructor and SNAP Educator Jennifer Palmer from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4. 

Children participants will also learn about exercise and nutritional eating during this fun dance instruction. 

Class sizes are limited to 20.

Project Wild at Oakville Education Center: June 6

This Summer Fun Shop features journaling time with County Extension Coordinator Donna Shanklin at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center on Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Participants will make their own journals from cardboard and duct tape before taking a few minutes to observe nature and record their findings. 

Class sizes are limited to 20.

Dancin’ Fun with Jennifer: June 11

On Tuesday, June 11, Palmer will offer dance instruction as well as tips for incorporating smoothies into a healthy diet. 

Classes are held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and limited to 20.

Project Wild at Oakville Education Center: June 13

Shanklin will return with registered participants to further explore Oakville Indian Mounds on Thursday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 

Children will be encouraged to record all their wildlife findings in their journals from insects to mammals. 

Class sizes are limited to 20.

Shooting Sports at Iron Rail Arena: June 18

Join 4-H Volunteer Shotgun Leader Keith Terry, 4-H Program Assistant Marsha Terry and 4-H Agent Kenneth Gamble at Iron Rail Arena on Tuesday, June 18, for safety shotgun and air rifle course. 

See and experience the safe use of firearms. A time for the workshop is still to be determined. Class size is limited to 20.

Outdoor Cooking: June 20

Join Terry and Gamble again on Thursday, June 20, to learn about cooking from a Dutch oven and other outdoor cooking techniques.

Project Wild at Oakville Education Center: June 25

Shanklin will lead registered participants on another fun day of exploring and journaling at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center on Tuesday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Class size is limited to 20.

Irrigation Event at Posey Farm: June 26

Adults may join the fun on Wednesday, June 26, at Posey Farm in Town Creek.

Children participants and adults will get to see and learn about irrigation on the farm in this less traditional Fun Shop. 

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Plants and Pollinators: June 27

Join instructor and Home and Grounds Agent Allyson Shabel on Thursday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for some hands-on fun.

Children will learn about the role of plants and pollinators as they make their own seed bombs and mason bee home. 

Class size is limited to 20.

Summer Food, Summer Moves at Town Creek Library: July 2

Join Instructor Palmer again in Town Creek on Tuesday, July 2, from 11a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for fun instruction on the sun’s role in the growth of colorful fruits and veggies.

Children will also enjoy making water sparklers and fruity fun chicken salad cups. Lunch will be included.

Summer Food, Summer Moves at Town Creek Library: July 9

Palmer will return to the library on Tuesday, July 9, with tips on staying cool from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Kids will be introduced to exciting healthy choices and learn about adding fruit and vegetables to a drink of water and how to make cool cucumber yogurt dips. Lunch will be included.

Birds in the Park at Moulton Parks and Recreation Center: July 11

Instructor Shabel will lead children on a bird watching hunt at Moulton Parks and Recreation Center on Thursday, July 11.

Children are asked to bring their own binoculars. The Fun Shop will also include a fun craft involving the construction of a birdhouse.

Summer Food, Summer Moves at Town Creek Library: July 16

Participants will meet at the Town Creek Library again on Tuesday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for music and dance with Instructor Palmer.

Children will get down with bell peppers in a fun exercise and enjoy Berry Jams party bites. Lunch will be included.

A Fun Shop for Thursday, July 18, will be announced at a later date.

Summer Food, Summer Moves at Town Creek Library: July 23

The Fun Shop will feature friendship on Tuesday, July 23, at the Town Creek Library from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Children will enjoy an “Ultimate Plate/Friendship” craft and summer vegetable salsa. Lunch will be included.

A Fun Shop for Thursday, July 25, will be announced at a later date.

Summer Food, Summer Moves at Town Creek Library: July 30

Instructor Palmer will host the final ACES Summer Fun Shop at the Town Creek Library on Tuesday, July 30, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Fun Shop will feature a cheers-and-leap game, herb gardening, and sports. 

Children will power up their snacks with a homerun hummus wrap. Lunch will be included.
