The Extension Office is hosting its summer workshop series for children ages eight to 18 years old during the months of June and July. 

The Summer Fun series continued this week with a dance session with SNAP Educator Jennifer Palmer on Tuesday and Project Wild with County Extension Coordinator Donna Shanklin on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the kids enjoyed a fun dance exercise that also incorporated healthy smoothies and lifestyle tips into the instruction. The Fun Shop took place at the Lawrence County Extension Office at 10 a.m.

Thursday, the kids visited the Oakville Indian Mounds and Education Center with Shanklin and recorded their wildlife findings in journals they constructed earlier this month. 

Next week, the fun will continue with a Shooting Sports session at Iron Rail Arena from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18.

A $5 fee is required to cover the cost of shells. Snacks will also be provided.

Interested participants should RSVP no later than Monday, June 17. The Fun Shop is subject to cancellation without participation from a minimum of five registrants. 

On Thursday, June 20, Terry and Gamble will host an Outdoor Cooking Fun Shop at the Moulton Mini Park small pavilion from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The cost to attend is $5. Those who participate will enjoy grilling a hamburger or a “Hobo meal” for their lunch.

Registration is required by Monday, June 17. The Fun Shop is subject to cancellation without participation from a minimum of five registrants. 

Shanklin will return with Project Wild on Tuesday, June 25, for a third day of exploring the grounds of the Oakville Education Center. The Fun Shop will begin at 10 a.m. 

Class size is limited to 20 participants. 

Adults may join the fun on Wednesday, June 26, at Posey Farm in Town Creek.

Child participants and adults will get to see and learn about irrigation on the farm in this less traditional Fun Shop. Registration for the Irrigation Event will begin at 7:30 a.m.

On Thursday, June 27, Extension Home and Grounds Agent Allyson Shabel for the Plants and Pollinators Summer Fun Shop from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Participants will meet at the Lawrence County Extension Office to learn about the role of plants and pollinators as they make their own seed bombs and mason bee home. 

Class size is limited to 20. 

The 2019 Summer Fun Shops are made possible by the following instructors and facilitators: 4-H Agent Kenneth Gamble, Town Creek Librarian Sharon Green, Food Safety Agent Susan Hill, SNAP Educator Jennifer Palmer, Home and Grounds Agent Allyson Shabel, County Extension Coordinator Donna Shanklin, 4-H Volunteer Leader Shotgun Keith Terry, 4-H Program Assistant Marsha Terry, and Animal Science & Forages Agent Paul Vining.

The Lawrence County Extension Office is located at 13075 Alabama Highway 157 in Moulton.

Preregistration is required for all classes. Class size may be limited, and each Fun Shop is subject to cancellation if less than five participants register.
