Former Commissioner Shankle dies at 73

Floyd Shankle

Former Lawrence County Commissioner, and a founding member of the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame, Willard Floyd Shankle, passed away at his home on Tuesday at the age of 73.

Shankle served as a commissioner for District 5 in Lawrence County from 1990 to 1994.

Former Commissioner Larry LouAllen, who served alongside Shankle during his term, recalls the man for his zeal and passion for the community.

“I liked Floyd. He came in here full of energy and had the most enthusiasm of any commissioner I have ever seen,” LouAllen said.

Shankle co-founded the county’s Hall of Fame with Wade Harrison in 1992—an endeavor that came from the ideas of two nostalgic men conversing about past ballgames and players from their hometown.

Shankle is survived by his wife, Cynthia.

The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6 to 8 at Parkway Funeral Home. The funeral will be held there on Thursday at 11 a.m.
