Courtland to host Third Annual Super Soaker 5K

Courtland’s Super Soaker 5K event is just as fun for spectators who get to soak racers from the sidelines in the summer heat.

The hottest part of the year is upon us, and what better way to cool down than by participating in Courtland’s Third Annual Super Soaker 5K and one-mile Fun Run on Saturday, Aug. 17?

The 5K race will begin on Tennessee Street at 5 p.m., with a one-mile fun run immediately following.

This unique 5K experience is as fun for onlookers as it is for the racers. Visitors to the event are encouraged to bring water guns to soak runners from the sidelines as they pass by on the racecourse, event planner Sonja Gillespie explains.

“Those who complete the race will finish with a cool blast from Courtland’s fire truck,” said Gillespie.

Though the community has hosted 5K races in the past, 2017 saw the first race run with the super soaker theme. Since its inception year, the event has continued to grow.

“We had 56 runners the first year and 90 runners last year,” Gillespie said. “We’re hoping to have over 100 this year.”

This year’s event will include an appearance from Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream truck from noon until 7 p.m.

A’s Café will also set up a booth on the square to sell hamburgers and hotdogs starting at 4:30 p.m.

Pre-registration for racers cost $20 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile Fun Run. Participants may also register the day of the event from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Same-day registration costs $25 for the 5K and $20 for the fun run.

The top male and top female racer of each event will be awarded following the races, Gillespie added. Registrants for the 5K will be divided into 14 age groups up to 70 years old and over, and the top three finishers of each group will also be awarded.

All proceeds benefit the Courtland Community Revitalization Committee in planning future events for their community, said Gillespie.

Gillespie said this year’s Super Soaker 5K is made possible by the following sponsors: Body Burn Fitness, BRAWCO, Courtland Baptist Church, The Albemarle Corporation, Sound Made EZ, Blue Dolphin Pools, Tennessee Valley Disposal, A’s Café, T-ShirtsNMore, Bank Independent, Brackin Drugs, Sibley Oil Company, Servico, and Chief & Snoogies BBQ.
