Lawrence County students attend Joe Wheeler youth tour

Select students from Lawrence County recently attended the Joe Wheeler Youth Tour that was held in Montgomery last week.

Joe Wheeler hosts a youth tour every year in Montgomery, with this year's tour taking place March 10-12. One-hundred-fifty students from 19 cooperatives are selected to attend the tour.

During the tour students participated in leadership sessions on rising above negative peer pressure and the importance of teamwork. They also take part in teambuilding exercises with Cea Cohen Elliot and also got the chance to tour the Alabama Department of Archives, the Alabama State House, the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, the Alabama Capitol and the Civil Rights Memorial.

Students also had the opportunity to meet with local legislators and community leaders as well as attend a special dinner and dance.

The goal of the youth tour is  to increase understanding of the value of rural electrification, become more familiar with the historical and political environment of the nation's capital and to increase knowledge of how the federal government works through visits with elected officials.
