A male child, approximately two years old, was struck by a vehicle on private property Friday, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office reported over the weekend. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Deputy Tim Sandlin said the child was at a relative’s residence on County Road 231 for a family gathering when the accident occurred around 8:18 p.m. on Friday.

He said an investigation continues, but nothing suggests there was any criminal activity involved.

“Obviously it’s very difficult for the family and friends of the family. We’re trying everything we can to gather all the information and facts for the family and citizens,” Sandlin said. “Everything points to an accident. It’s just very heartbreaking.”

Out of respect for the family, the child’s name, as well as the names of those involved, are not being released at this time.
