MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama authorities say a high-speed police chase ended with a crash, a gunshot and the driver found dead.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Lt. Joe Piggott says the driver sped off rather than pull over for a suspected traffic violation on Interstate 10 late Thursday.

News outlets report the driver crashed into another vehicle before heading toward the shoreline on Mobile's Bayway. Authorities say the driver then lost control of the car, hit several trees and fled toward the water. A gunshot was heard, and authorities didn't say Friday who fired it.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is working on the driver's identity and cause of death.
