BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Encompass Health Corp. (EHC) on Monday reported second-quarter earnings of $33.5 million.

On a per-share basis, the Birmingham, Alabama-based company said it had net income of 34 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains and pretax gains, came to 31 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 39 cents per share.

The rehabilitation hospital operator posted revenue of $1.07 billion in the period, topping Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.06 billion.

Encompass Health shares have decreased nearly 4% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $66.78, dropping slightly in the last 12 months.
