Outside the rain hadn't arrived yet in Trinity, Alabama. However, inside the East Lawrence gym it was raining three pointers as the Lawrence County Red Devils blitzed the East Lawrence Eagles with the outside shot.
The Red Devils hit a total of nine three point shots in the first half to pull away from the Eagles and cruise to a 67-30 win.
"Our game, our offense, is set up to allow us to take the best shot possible," said Lawrence County head coach K.C. Orr. "We don't want to live and die with the three point shot, but sometimes there's nights that the outside shot is going to be open and we have to be able to knock those down. We did a good job of that tonight."
The first quarter was tight for the most part, although Sadie Thompson did hit a buzzer beating three to make the lead 20-13 heading into the second period.
It was then that the Red Devils began to pull away.
Lawrence County hit five of their nine first half three pointers in the second quarter and outscored to the Egales 24-7 to take a commanding 44-20 halftime lead.
Thompson, Lawrence County's leading scorer on the night, finished with 20 points in the first half.
The star junior missed half of last season with an injury and played through the other half not at 100%. She looks to back to 100% so far this season.
"I feel a lot healthier. It's been a long road and last year was really hard on me," said Thompson. "I feel like I've gotten back to where I was."
Obviously, having a healthy Sadie Thompson back is a huge plus for this team. However, Orr is also excited about the other players. The Red Devils returned all their starters off a young team and also got Chloe Orr back, who was a starter as a sophomore before having to miss last season. Having all that experience back is looking like it could be very beneficial down the road.
"Sadie is great, she's an awesome player and when she's healthy she can do a lot of amazing things," Orr said. "But I'm more excited about our whole team. We went through a lot of ups and downs last year, but we have everybody back, we have Chloe back and the things this team can do helps open up Sadie for the things she can do."
Thompson finished with a game high 26 points, while Anna Clare Hutto had 10. Chloe Orr and Raigen Henderson both finished with 9.
Devora Izquierdo finished with 14 points to lead East Lawrence.
