With the holidays over we’re now in the home stretch of the basketball season.

The county tournament will take place next week, and while that always brings excitememt we have to pump the brakes a bit. Before that tournament there’s something a little more important for county teams to take care of, and that would be area play.

Between the time of writing this, which is before games on Tuesday Jan. 7, and next Tuesday Jan. 14, almost all county teams will wrap up area play. Only Hatton and R.A. Hubbard will play any area games after the county tournament and it will only be a single game each.

So, where does your team sit  in area play? Let’s dive into that.

Lawrence County

Record: 6-8 (1-2 area)

Area win: Russellville

Area losses: Hamilton, West Point.

Area place: Tied for second

Games left: at Hamilton 1/7, vs. Russellville 1/10 and at West Point

The skinny: Starters Sadie Thompson and Raigen Henderson got hurt in an area loss to Hamilton and the Red Devils had to play West Point without them. They’re back now but all roads lead through West Point. Upsetting the Warriors on the road will be a tall task, but if they succeed they will have a chance to at least climb into a tie for first place.

Record: 13-4 (5-0 area)

Area wins: Tanner, Sheffield, Tharptown, Colbert County x2

Area place: First

Games left: Sheffield 1/7, at Tanner 1/10, Tharptown 1/21

The skinny: It’s hard to imagine the Hatton Lady Hornets not finishing first in the area for the second year in a row but it is possible. The good news is that they would have to lose all their remaining games to not finish at least tied for first.

R.A. Hubbard

Record: 5-5 (4-1 area)

Area wins: Oakwood Aventist x2, Whitesburg, Athens Bible.

Area loss: Lindsay Lane

Area place: Second

Games left: 1/7 at Whitesburg, 1/14 vs. Athens Bible, 1/24 vs. Lindsay Lane.

The skinny: Hubbard only has five wins, but the good news for them is that four of those are area wins. The girls are in the exact same spot as the boys in that they need to defeat Lindsay Lane to force a tie for first.

East Lawrence

Record: 4-11 (1-1 area)

Area win: Colbert Heights

Area loss: Phil Campbell

Area place: second

Games left: 1/7 at Colbert Heights, 1/10 vs. Phil Campbell

The skinny: Phil Campbell hasn’t locked up the area yet but it’s going to be a tough task to knock them out of first place.
