With six weeks to go until the start of football season and just a few weeks to go until fall camp, we’ll be starting a new series.
The series will take a look at each county team’s opponents in the weeks specified. This week we’ll be taking a look at each team’s opponent in weeks one and two.
Note: R.A. Hubbard actually starts their season in week 0, since they are the only school to not play a jamboree.
R.A. Hubbard @ Cherokee 8/22
Head coach: Lymos McDonald
2018 record: 4-7
Last year’s meeting: Hubbard won 26-22
What to know: The former Courtland head coach Lymos McDonald has done a good job at Cherokee, leading the Indians to the quarterfinals in 2017. They took a step back last year and the rebuild might not be over. Even though it was just a spring game, the Hatton Hornets defeated Cherokee with relative ease in May.
East Lawrence @ St. John Paul II 8/30
Head coach: David Lloyd
2018 record: 8-3
Last year’s meeting: St. John won 51-0
What to know: St. John has only fielded a team since 2012 and the most games they had won in a season was three heading into last year. East Lawrence drew some bad luck as, just like every other private school, St. John kept building towards a breakout season and 2018 was it. Their offense averaged over 36 points a game and they return a quarterback who was honorable mention All State as a junior.
Hatton vs. West Morgan 8/30
Head coach: Mikel Riggs
2018 record: 1-9
Last year’s meeting: Hatton won 36-14
What to know: Riggs enters his second year for the Rebels after a rough first year in which he had to replace a mass exodus of seniors from the year before.
Lawrence County vs. Madison Academy 8/30
Head coach: Bob Godsey
2018 record: 10-2
Last year’s meeting: Madison Academy won 54-20
What to know: A familiar foe will be on the sideline as Bob Godsey comes to Madison Academy from Hartselle. Godsey left Hartselle with a 141-51 record from 2003-2018, including 14 playoff appearances, five region titles and a state championship in 2011.
He takes over a program that won three state championships from 2012-2014 in 3A but now plays in 5A. The Mustangs are known for producing division one guys but must replace key players, including second team All State quarterback Luke Nail who transferred to Danville.
Lawrence County vs. Hayden 9/6
Head coach: Keith Register
2018 record: 4-6
Last year’s meeting: Lawrence County won 25-22
What to know: Hayden finished 4-6 last year but three of their four wins came in the last four games, which were all region games. A narrow 17-14 loss to Dora could have sent them to the playoffs if gone otherwise.
East Lawrence @ Lauderdale County 9/6
Head coach: Jeff Mason
2018 record: 4-7
Last year’s meeting: Lauderdale County won 28-0
What to know: The Tigers have a rich football history and after not ever winning less than nine games under previous head coach Bob Grisham, they must be frustrated with the past three seasons. The Tigers won seven in 2016, declined to six in 2017 and to just four last year.
R.A. Hubbard @ Shoals Christian 8/30
Head coach: Kelly Rushing
2018 record: 2-8
Last year’s meeting: Hubbard won 46-21
What to know: The Flames will have their third head coach in three seasons as they try for their first winning season since 2012
Hatton @ Red Bay 9/6
Head coach: Michael Jackson
2018 record: 9-3
Last year’s meeting: Red Bay won 32-6
What to know: The Tigers had a nice bounce back year last year from a 5-5 campaign to go 9-3 and even knock off Colbert County. Hatton has not defeated Red Bay since 1987.
