The Lawrence County tournament will kick off this Saturday night with varsity girls’ action.

The Hatton Lady Hornets are the top seed in the tournament, and they will take on the fourth seeded East Lawrence Eagles.

Lawrence County is the two seed and they will play third seeded R.A. Hubbard.

The first game will be Lawrence County vs. Hubbard at 5 p.m. Hatton vs. East Lawrence will take place at 8.

Here is where each team stand going into the tournament. Please note, team’s record was at time of publication.

--

East Lawrence Eagles

Head coach: Ernie Ferguson

Seed: 4

Record: 1-14

This season’s county results: Lost to Lawrence County twice, Hatton twice and R.A. Hubbard

2020 tournament results: Semi-final loss to Hatton

Player to watch Kaitlin Dutton

Preview: It’s been a rough year for the Eagles who play with two freshman and five eighth graders on the roster. The loss of last year’s star Alexandria Jackson has also been tough to overcome.

Seniors Kaitlin Dutton and Ashkea Foster will have to step up big to pull the upset.

R.A. Hubbard Chiefs

Head coach: Gary Martin

Seed: 3

Record: 5-2

This season’s county results: Lost to Lawrence County and Hatton. Defeated East Lawrence.

2020 tournament results: Semi-final loss to Lawrence County

Player to watch Alex Orr

Preview: The Lady Chiefs have had a top-notch season so far, earning a spot in the 1A top 10.

While the Chiefs have overcome the gap between 1A and 5A in recent years, it could prove to be much tougher this year. Lawrence County’s depth surpasses that of R.A. Hubbard.

Still, Senior Alex Orr is as good as anybody in the tournament and also has more experience than most as this will be her fifth tourney.

Lawrence County Red Devils

Head coach: K.C. Orr

Seed: 2

Record: This season’s county results: Split with Hatton. Defeated East Lawrence (twice) and R.A. Hubbard.

2020 tournament results: Finals loss to Hatton

Player to watch Sadie Thompson

Preview: When Orr took over three years ago, he inherited a roster filled with youth.

Three years later and his patience has paid off.

The Red Devils are talented, experienced and deep. Despite being the two seed, they might be the hottest team coming into the tournament.

Lawrence County has won nine games in a row, including 53-49 win over Hatton, which was Orr’s first as head coach.

Hatton Hornets

Head coach: Chasta Chamness

Seed: 1

Record: 11-2

This season’s county results:  Split with Lawrence County. Defeated East Lawrence (twice) and R.A. Hubbard.

2020 tournament results: County champions

Player to watch Kailyn Quails

Preview: To the surprise of no one, the defending county champions are the top seed in the tournament. The Hornets have been just as good as advertised with close losses to 4A Deshler and 5A Lawrence County , who they also beat, being the only blemishes on their record.

Quails is the reigning county MVP, but also keep a look out for Josie Harville. The Senior Hatton Star is returning to play in her first tourney since 2019 after suffering an ACL injury in last year’s season opener.
